Secant and Tangent Walls are earth retention systems consisting of a series of drilled piers strategically spaced to provide a structural wall. Typically, there are two types of piles a primary pile which are installed initially and secondary pile are constructed between the primary piles after sufficient compressive strength of the concrete has been met. The primary piles are reinforced with reinforcement steel or I-beams and the secondary piles usually are non-reinforced. Depending upon the loads, soil conditions and wall geometry, it may be necessary to install tie backs to provide lateral resistance of the piles. Tangent pile walls are similar to secant pile walls, with the exception the piles do not overlap but rather are positioned next to one another and outer edges touching. These walls are typically considered, when excavations occur near a heavy loaded structure, or to function as a soil retention system to hold back the earth and carry compressive loading.
